Notes on long summer rides:

  • In cooler weather I wear the inner layer of my arm winter gear:
custom arm protector and custom polyester tubes (bridging arm protector and cotton T shirt sleeve).
  • I wear the bright (screaming yellow) Pearl Izumi Zephrr vest even in the hottest weather because I want to be easily visible.
  • I wear size 43 in summer and size 47 cycling shoes in winter.

What I take on long summer rides:

  • Partially frozen Polar water bottle and Camelbak reservoir with 3 large 8 oz ice cubes
and 32 oz of water. On the road, I fill the water bottle with Platypus shutoff value. I made a wood rack for the freezer to hold the water bottle at a 30 degree angle and 3 cups for making the large ice cubes.
  • Cotton handkerchief for wiping sweat off my face
  • Bicycle lock
  • Two bicycle tubes
  • Bicycle repair tools
  • RainShield O2 Cycling Series jacket (sometimes)
  • Homemade mesh bug mask that attaches to my helmet with velcro

What I no longer use for long summer rides:

  • Cycling tops, tights and shorts
